The Scole Experiment: A Modern Investigation into Physical Mediumship

Between 1993 and 1998, a small circle of physical mediums and researchers gathered in Scole, Norfolk (England), to investigate reported physical phenomena under structured conditions. This became known as the Scole Experiment.

Unlike public demonstrations or touring séances, the Scole sittings were private, consistent, and developmental. The group met regularly in a dedicated basement séance room, allowing phenomena — if present — to evolve gradually over time rather than being forced for performance.
This developmental aspect is important. Traditional physical mediumship circles have long suggested that phenomena strengthen through stability, trust, and repetition. The Scole circle worked together for years, not weeks.
Research Involvement
Members connected to the Society for Psychical Research (SPR) attended numerous sittings. Detailed written records were kept. Reports were later compiled into what became known as The Scole Report (Keen, Ellison & Fontana, 1999).
The SPR itself has a long history of investigating anomalous phenomena since the late 19th century, including mediumship, telepathy, and survival research. The Scole sittings were therefore not operating in isolation but within an established investigative tradition.
The researchers were not naïve to the history of fraud in physical mediumship. Controls and documentation were part of the process, even if debate remains regarding whether all controls were sufficient.
Reported Phenomena
Accounts from the Scole sittings describe:
Small self-luminous lights moving through the room
Audible raps responding intelligently to questions
Object displacement within the séance space
Apports (objects appearing unexpectedly)
Direct voice communication
Markings and images appearing on sealed photographic film
The photographic film reports attracted particular attention. Sealed canisters were reportedly secured prior to sessions, and when later developed, contained images or markings not present beforehand.
For mediums, the interest is not simply in the phenomena themselves but in the sustained nature of the documentation. Reports were made across multiple sessions over years, rather than as isolated claims.
Why The Scole Experiment Continues to Be Referenced
The Scole Experiment remains widely referenced in physical mediumship discussions because it represents:
A modern case (late 20th century rather than Victorian era)
Multi-year continuity
Formal documentation through a recognised research body
Attempted structure rather than theatrical exhibition
It did not claim to conclusively prove survival or spirit communication. It documented what participants reported under consistent conditions.
For developing mediums, this matters. It demonstrates that physical phenomena have not only historical precedent but modern investigative attempts.
A Calm Perspective
The Scole Experiment did not eliminate scepticism. Nor did it claim to.
What it provided was sustained documentation of reported phenomena within a structured circle. For some, it remains compelling. For others, unresolved questions remain.
In either case, it stands as a modern chapter in the long history of physical mediumship investigation — and a reminder that documentation and discipline are essential companions to experience.
