Part II of our Tarot Series begins here with the Major Arcana.

Every Journey Starts with a Step
There’s a point in every person’s life when we have to begin again — a move, a career change, a relationship ending, a call we can’t ignore. In the tarot, this moment is captured perfectly by The Fool: a traveller poised at the edge of a cliff, sunlight on their face, a small pack slung lightly over one shoulder.
The Fool isn’t reckless; they’re open. They remind us that growth starts before certainty. This card is the soul’s inhale before a new life begins.
The Symbolism
In most decks, The Fool carries a white rose (purity of intention), a small dog (instinct and protection), and walks toward the unknown with the sun rising behind them. Everything they need is already with them — but they haven’t yet realised it.
Psychologically, the imagery reflects the state of beginner’s mind — that fertile place where learning, faith, and courage intersect. It’s not about naivety; it’s about presence without fear.
The Psychology of Beginnings
Modern psychology describes this moment as liminality — standing between what was and what will be.It’s uncomfortable, uncertain, but full of creative potential.
Research into growth mindset (Dweck, 2006) shows that embracing uncertainty fuels resilience and adaptability. The Fool symbolises exactly that: curiosity over control.
In readings, this card appears when life asks us to trust the process — to make the leap before every detail is clear.
The Fool in Everyday Life
Starting a new job after years of stability
Returning to study later in life
Saying yes to a passion project with no guaranteed outcome
Opening your heart again after disappointment
Each of these moments invites you to hold the same faith The Fool carries — that movement itself creates clarity.
From Foolish to Free
In many traditions, “fool” once meant holy innocent — one who follows the inner call rather than the crowd. In that sense, the Fool’s path is the start of authenticity. It’s the courage to act on intuition, not on approval.
Spiritually, The Fool represents trust in life itself — the belief that when you take a step toward the unknown, something larger meets you halfway.
When The Fool Appears in a Reading
Upright: A new beginning; openness; adventure; potential; a leap of faith.
Reversed: Hesitation; fear of risk; ignoring instincts; resistance to change.
When this card lands on the table, ask: What would I do if I weren’t afraid of starting over?
Reflection Prompt
+ Where in my life am I standing at the edge of something new?
+ What beliefs or fears hold me back from that first step?
+ How might curiosity — not certainty — guide me forward?
The Fool’s Lesson
Tarot teaches that wisdom isn’t found in knowing what comes next — it’s found in the willingness to explore. The Fool reminds us that beginnings are sacred not because they’re safe, but because they’re alive.
Every reading, every risk, every day starts the same way — with one brave step into possibility.
